Job Description THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated journeyman-level Marine Mechanical Engineer with experience in ship propulsion to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC . An ideal candidate will have prior experience with developing ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, weight assessments, and/or conducting trade studies on the configuration of propulsion and associated components. Familiarity with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations is also desirable. Typical Responsibilities: Provide technical support and documentation for the design, development, and evaluation of marine vessels, ship machinery, and related equipment, including power supply and propulsion systems. Research and develop ship propulsion systems, such as diesels, gas turbines, diesel-electric systems, propellers, rudders, thrusters, gears, shafts, bearings, seals, noise, vibration, and interfaces with dynamic positioning systems, applying applicable design standards. Develop system documentation and ship specifications. Conduct analyses of propulsion systems and types, lead the development of technical data packages, and perform reviews. Conduct trade studies regarding ship configuration. Location & Travel: Primarily onsite (at least 3 days/week) at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. Alternate telework schedules or locations may be considered for especially qualified candidates. Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks. Physical Activity & Work Environment: Primarily desk/computer work. May involve visits to waterfront/shipboard environments, including traversing shipboard spaces such as confined spaces, ladders, and hatches. Compensation: The pay range is $80,000 – 112,000, based on experience, education, and qualifications. Requirements: U.S. citizenship and eligibility for a DoD Secret security clearance. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution; Master’s degree preferred. At least three (3) years of relevant experience in ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, weight assessments, and trade studies. Experience with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs and familiarity with ABS, NVR, and relevant design rules. Proficiency with productivity software and strong communication skills.
