JOB DESCRIPTION

Join Our Team as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist!

As an Orientation and Mobility Specialist, new hires will empower individuals with visual impairments to navigate their surroundings independently. Teaching critical skills, supporting families and caregivers, and shaping a brighter future through comprehensive instruction is what a day in the life of an Orientation and Mobility specialist looks like.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct initial and ongoing assessments.
  2. Communicate the extent of training needed to help achieve goals.
  3. Provide individualized instruction to adults, ages 18 to 90 plus.
  4. Develop comprehensive and well-documented lesson plans.
  5. Accurately document students' progress and maintain up-to-date records.
  6. Schedule students for Orientation and Mobility classes.
  7. Teach students in various settings, including the classroom, in the field, in the home setting, and remotely online.
  8. Teach balance and coordination techniques to students as needed.
  9. Ensure visually impaired individuals can travel safely, confidently, and efficiently.
  10. Conduct seminars and presentations in the community.
  11. Attend and actively participate in special events as required.

Education:

  1. Masters degree in special education with specialization in Orientation and Mobility (Required).
  2. Certification by the Academy of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals.
  3. Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) proficiency is preferred.

Experience:

  1. One year of progressively responsible experience training visually impaired and/or disabled individuals.
  2. Valid license & two years of good driving history.
  3. Special Education experience is desirable.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  1. Strong knowledge of Orientation and Mobility training techniques and mobility devices for the visually impaired is also required.
  2. Good communication, training, time management, and organizational skills.
  3. The ability to work independently and effectively train the visually impaired to achieve their Orientation and Mobility goals is essential.
  4. Required to travel extensively throughout the surrounding areas.

Work Schedule / Availability:

  1. Full-time
  2. 7.5-hour shift
  3. Day shift
  4. Monday-Friday

Work in diverse environments, including standard office settings, classrooms, field locations, homes, public transportation, community centers, and other outdoor training areas.

Supplemental pay types:
